WEEK 1 - BEGIN
Are you feeling good?
Click HERE to hear Nina Simone sing Feeling Good. Don't stay on the YouTube page. Let the music play and click back here to your in-box to continue reading. (Yes, right now)
Welcome back. As soon as the band joins Nina, get up and move your body. dance. sway. feel the music. act out the words.
Making art is about doing, not thinking about doing.
This is your year of DOING, not THINKING.
I'm guessing that you spend a lot of time thinking about your art. Maybe more time thinking than actually doing, yes? Well, it's not only a new dawn and a new day, but it's a new year and it's the perfect time to make a new habit of doing.
If you DID move to the music - CONGRATULATIONS! You've been inspired and motivated. Keep up the good work. Dance a little every day. (It feels good doesn't it?)
If you read this, the first of the 52 PickUps, and made the decision not to get up and move, or to do it later, then it's going to be very hard for you to be inspired and motivated this year.
You see, motivation is a momentary decision. Every moment of your day you decide to do or not do.
Maybe you think it doesn't matter if you passed on getting up and moving.
But it does.
This was a test. If you didn't move, you failed. You failed yourself. You signed up to be inspired and motivated and you let it slide.
The nice thing about moments is there is always a new one. At any given moment you can start over.
This is your moment. What will you do?
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ― Martha Graham

Week 10 - Who's Counting?
It's week 10, but who's counting?
Definition of ACCOUNTABILITY
You may think you want to do something. You probably really do want to do it.
(find more time for art)
(try a new technique)
(submit to a show)
(propose an article to a magazine)
(finish that project you started months go)
You may even tell others that you want to.
I'm sure you intend to.
(and dammit I will!)
But you don't.
I didn't, on account of ________________.
I couldn't, on account of _______________.
_______ was counting on me so I didn't get it done.
I didn't count on _________________ happening.
There's a lot of counting going on, but no account ability.
A sign of wisdom and maturity is when you
come to terms with the realization that your decisions cause your rewards and consequences. You are responsible for your life, and your ultimate success depends on the choices you make. Denis Waitley

Week 21 - Does Practice Make Perfect?
And then you grow older and realize:
A) Nothing I ever do is perfect
B) Perfect is an elusive dangling carrot I will never acquire
C) I want to start out perfect
D) I hate to practice
E) All of the above
I'm sure you know by now that perfect doesn't really exist. Knowing that you, me, anyone can never truly reach perfection should take the pressure off. But sadly it does not.
In order to be successful and happy with the art you create, you need to reconsider your objectives and redefine your goals.
Here are 3 practices to adopt now. Today. Right this minute.
1. Take imperfect action on a regular basis. Don't wait to be able to do it perfectly because that time will never come.
2. Make "pretty darn good" your goal.
3. Strive for quantity, not quality (aka practice.)
Week 39 - Double Ds Will Get You Far
The driving force behind 52 Pick Up: A Year of Motivation and Inspiration, is to make you sit up, take notice. and take action. There are many ways to do this. Not every attempt will work for everyone, but that's the point of getting 52 of them. One is bound to work every so often.
One of the hallmarks of creativity is to integrate and synthesize by combining things that are completely unrelated and bring them into the world in a new light.
To create art and an art filled life requires two things: a vivid imagination and focused discipline. One is fun and comes easily. The other requires intention and work (albeit, fun work.) If all you're doing is dreaming, life is unbalanced.
If you like what you see and want
